To me there is nothing more important than good instruction. Whether it's once a week or once a year, it is imperative that you, your drum corps, and/or your band as a whole get some sort of instruction. Any drum corps that is serious about improving must take this into consideration. I have been very lucky in my career to be taught by some of the best players in our idiom. My primary teacher was Hugh Cameron. He and I spent many years playing in the same drum corps. The person that had the greatest influence on me was, of course, Alex Duthart. I spent many hours studying his scores and going to every workshop that he presented. I, also, was fortunate to play in the Metro Toronto Police Pipe Band with his son, Drew Duthart. Jim Kilpatrick has been very influential. His advice has brought a whole new dimension to my playing. So, as you can see, I have been blessed with having been taught by some of the best. For my part, I have been teaching for many years and doing workshops since I moved to the United States about 12 years ago. Rather than me telling you about the corps I have taught, I have included a few letters and evaluations about my instructional and playing abilities on the Recommendations page for your information. The cost of a weekend workshop is $350.00 plus expenses. On the Friday night, I like to get together with the lead stick and pipe major to go over our goals. The class starts at 9:00 am and goes to about 5:00 pm. We start out working on exercises that meet the needs of the players. From there, we progress to drum scores that the corps is playing. On Sunday, we would start about the same time. If there were any beginners that would like a lesson, this would be a good time. Tuning and maintenance of instruments will also be covered. In the afternoon, it would be nice if the whole band could get together to work on ensemble. All written material is supplied. This is just an example. I'm willing to structure a workshop to fit your needs.
